The WFTDA stands in solidarity with the Black roller derby community. #blacklivesmatter #blacklivesmatterinrollerderby

The WFTDA acknowledges the failure of our recent statement and open threads on social media to directly support the rage, fear, and frustration felt by our Black community members following the murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, Tony McDade, and Nina Pop. We are deeply grateful to Baller Shot Caller and other members of the WFTDA community for calling us in.

Our intent was to listen and amplify Black voices on our social media platforms. However, intent doesn’t matter when the actual impact of our words and actions hurt the community. We now understand that it felt like the absence of a statement of support, or worse, an ask for emotional labor. We apologize for being silent in a moment when being outspoken was needed.

We shared the call-in video from Baller Shot Caller to WFTDA in an effort to bear witness to the pain that our Black community members are feeling, take responsibility for the stress we've created both recently and historically, and acknowledge our duty to take an active role in ensuring WFTDA leagues start dismantling racism at the ground level.

The WFTDA stands in solidarity with the Black roller derby community and everyone gathering worldwide to demand justice and accountability for these stolen lives. We are continuing crucial work on anti-racism and decolonization in an effort to build trust and foster active engagement in our organization around injustice and oppression. We will share updates of that work in the coming weeks.

Join us for a discussion and Q&A with the Board of Directors on the WFTDA Facebook page on Friday, June 5th at 5:00pm ET. This will be open to the public and we encourage you to invite your league members and community.
